In this episode I'm joined by Marcia (MJ) Calloway,  Chief Diversity, Equity & InclOfficer at San Ysidro Health.

Marcia has broken barriers as the first Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer at San Ysidro Health in San Diego, California. In this inaugural role, she is responsible for leading the diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) work for the organization. Specifically, she is responsible for designing, developing, and implementing comprehensive and innovative DEIB practices, policies and strategies.

She has also worked nationally as the Director of Workforce Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion for the American Institute of Architects (AIA) developing programs, initiatives, and events increasing equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging in the architecture profession. She led the charge to increase representation of women architects of color in crucial leadership positions. Marcia consulted with the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) to examine elements of equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging in trade and professional associations.

In a previous role with the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) of Greater Houston, she served as Director of Procurement and Supplier Diversity.  She oversaw and delivered strategic diversity, inclusion, and supplier organizational objectives. She also served as Chair for the first Houston YMCA Diversity and Inclusion Council and participated as a D&I thought leader for the National YMCA of the USA Emerging Multicultural Leadership Experience (EMLE) conferences.

Driven by her passion, Marcia addresses systemic racism in organizational business practices, policies, and processes. She advocates for the voiceless and marginalized who have historically been denied access to equitable salaries, employment, mentors, education, and senior leadership positions. She considers Equity as having access to the table; Diversity is about acquiring a seat at the table; Inclusion is having a voice there; and Belonging is having that voice acknowledged and heard.

Marcia holds a master’s degree in Organizational Management and Leadership and a bachelor’s degree in Human Services from Springfield College.
